YOUR FIRST HOME:  [ back ]
Although this is the last article in the sequence of wedding events, it's probably the first thing talked about after the proposal. The setting up of a home is a big undertaking. The newlyweds discuss their likes and dislikes about condominiums, apartments, and houses; and whether to purchase or whether to rent. According to our sources, even this aspect of marriage is changing. More and more brides and grooms today are investing in real estate ownership, instead of renting. If they can afford the down payment, the mortgage payments are about the same as paying rent ---except it's theirs ---they own it. The best thing about owning real estate is that it nearly always appreciates in value. Today's housing market offers many types of accommodations and finding the one that best suits your needs can be a challenge. The names given to different housing types can vary from region to region, but listed below are the most common types available for a quick reference:
  • Single family detached house: A free-standing dwelling of one or more storeys designed to accommodate one family.

  •
  • Semi-detached house: One of two single family houses joined and separated by a common wall.

  •
  • Duplex: Two dwelling units, one above the other. The owner may choose to live in one unit and rent the other as a source of investment income.

  •
  • Row or Town House: One of several single family dwellings joined together by common walls.

  •
  • High rise apartments: One of several dwellings contained in a single structure.

  •

If buying a home is your choice, contact the professional realtor to handle the transaction for you. He'll/she'll do all the work of looking, phoning for viewing appointments, picking up keys, arranging mortgages, and will even take you on inspections. All this at no charge to you --- the realtor's fee is paid by the vendor.
