THE WEDDING CAKE:
The wedding cake is part of the old traditional marriage celebrations that has passed the test of time. Historically the cake was cut by both the bride and groom with the groom's hand on top --- symbolizing the head of the household. The bride would take a piece of the cake and feed it to her groom and then he would take a piece and feed it to her; showing the guests that they intended to share and provide for one another. The sharing continued from the bride and groom to the gathered guests by the newlyweds cutting and passing out all the cake except the top layer. This was saved and eaten on a special occasion --- like the first anniversary.

Today, the cake that is on display at the reception and used for pictures, in many cases, is a false cake, while the real cake has already been cut, wrapped, and boxed to be handed out to the guests as they leave the reception. Even the ceremony of the cake cutting is often only an act for the cameras. The wedding cakes of today have departed from the tradition of being made as a fruit cake. Wedding cakes are now available in the bride's choice of flavours, whether it be chocolate, marble, white or even carrot. The important thing to remember with cakes, is to have them prepared by a professional bakery, who will not only cut and wrap the cut pieces but will deliver to the reception hall as well .
