I have been pitching horseshoes since I was 14 years old for those that wonder that was 30 years ago. I started out throwing a double flip for 4 years then realized that if I wanted to be good at this sport I needed to throw a turn so I switched to a 1 3/4 turn and have been throwing this turn exclusively other than a few unsuccessful attempts at a 1 1/4 (short lived). My pitching high lights have been 8th place finish in the Championship group at the 1993 World tournament. Two second place finishes in the Canadian Championships 93 & 97. Two Ontario doubles championships and a bunch of wins in some local tournaments. My personal best as far as average is 79.8% for a complete tournament (1994) 28 in a row (world Tourney 1993) back to back 90% games (1994) and 1 perfect game 16 shoes winter of 96 (doubles). In 1986 I decided to make a horseshoe that felt and balanced the way I thought a horseshoe should for my specific pitching style. My goal /dream was to design the shoe first then win the World Championship with it rather than the typical which is win a world championship or 2 then get a shoe named after you. The result was the M&M Special. I was fortunate that the same time my horseshoe was released to market my sister (Sandy McLachlin) got serious about pitching. Over a two year period 1987/1988 she was the best horseshoe pitcher in the World bar none (of course using the family horseshoe) M&Ms. Everyone in our family have pitched in the World Horseshoe Tournamnet at one time or another except my mother but she is always out there cheering us on. My father and partner in the business (Gary McLachlin) throws a flip (Pythons)at about 25%. My wife Karen also throws a flip (Pythons & M&Ms) and has been as high as 50-55% average. Both our sons have had the experience of pitching in many World Tournaments as juniors both started when they were 8 yeras old although neither is currently active in the game it doesn't stop them from showing off what they've learned whenever they happen upon a campground game of horseshoesshoes. Below is my perfect game pitched in doubles with Mathew![]()
