About Good Neighbours:

"Every child in Chatham-Kent should have a bed to sleep in at night, and a warm coat in the winter."

"Good Neighbours brings hope and builds self-esteem in the lives of those underserved in Chatham-Kent."

Good Neighbours helps well over 2000 families living in poverty each year. There are thousands of families in Chatham-Kent who are living on fixed or low incomes who cannot afford to purchase the much needed necessities for their home. Sadly, and all too often, the children of these families suffer both emotionally and physically because of lack of basic needs. According to the local Healthy Babies program and the local Public Health Unit, 22% of children under the age of six in our community live in poverty.

Good Neighbours provides beds, furniture, lamps, bikes, cribs, strollers, change tables, bedding, kitchenware, winter clothing and many household items to underserved citizens. This program is free of charge, providing a dignified way for families to acquire basic necessities.

The Good Neighbours program is supported by donations of good, used, household items from the community. When a citizen wishes to donate their items, our dedicated volunteers and firefighters from around Chatham-Kent will pick up and deliver these items to the Good Neighbours Depot. However, despite the community’s generous efforts, there has been a marked increase in the number of residents requiring our services. The program has now been forced to purchase brand new children’s beds, cribs and winter coats to keep pace with the demand. In 2002, 275 single children’s beds were distributed to children in Chatham-Kent.
