What's a Ratite?
The name used for
the group of large flightless birds that include emus, ostrich, rheas,
cassowaries and kiwis. The ratites are so named from the latin word ratis,
which means a flat raft. This refers to their flat breast bone which lacks
a keel, hence the reason for their lack of ability to fly.
Over 55 million years
ago ratites adapted to running from flying.
