Economic Update: Outrageous, Georgetti said

November 23, 2006
OTTAWA – “It is outrageous! At a time when corporate profits and corporate bank accounts are at a record high and the incomes of the high earners have never been higher, the Minister of Finance for Canada delivers a program to further enrich those who don’t need it. How disconnected can you get from the daily lives of working Canadians?” asks Ken Georgetti, president of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Georgetti explains that the Minister’s biases show when his documents now call “highly-skilled workers” everyone making more than $120,000 a year. Under their new name, the highest income earners deserve more fiscal favours.

“Our members will never enjoy these measures, they are tired of being trickled down upon,” adds Georgetti. “The average worker earns just about $40,000 a year.

“The Minister offers no long-term economic strategy to deal with the real concerns of Canadians.”

“Everything corporate Canada and the right-wing think-tanks wanted is there. But absent are any sense that people and society matter.”

“There is nothing in this document about promoting greater equality or greater economic security for working families: that is a shame,” concludes Georgetti.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3.2 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 135 district labour councils. Web site: www.canadianlabour.ca
