2006 Health and Safety Activist Award

The winner of the of the 2006 Health and Safety Activist Award is Jan Liberty of NHWU - PSAC Local 00037 presented by the Chatham-Kent Labour Council and the Workers Health and Safety Centre.

Jan Liberty has been a labour activist for 21 years. She is a National Health & Welfare Union representative under the Public Service Alliance of Canada. During her years of union work, Jan has succeeded in winning many significant WSIB cases on behalf of her members, related to Environmental Hypersensitivity. These cases arose out of a workplace exposure to toxic glue in 1993 and subsequent mould and fungus exposure due to microbial growths in the air ventilation system of the Judy LaMarsh Building. She managed to get the Judy LaMarsh Building evacuated for 18 months during which the air system was refitted. She has won refusal to work appeals with Labour Canada on behalf of our Windsor staff, she has represented members of other unions in their appeals processes. She was the driving force in the development a scent free training program and policy within the Public Service Alliance, nationally. She has worked with Dr. Abe Reinhardt from the Occupational Health Clinic, with the result that Dr. Reinhardt wrote a paper for the American Journal of Industrial Medicine about one of Jan's cases*

Environmental Illness is now one of the recognized Occupational Diseases Adjudicated by WSIB.
