The first central labour body in Canada was created in 1871 by
John Hewitt and others because they believed that united workers could make
changes to improve the quality of life of others. Today, there are labour
councils in 125 locations all across Canada. Almost 4 million Canadians belong
to a union.
On March 20 1958, the Chatham Kent Labour Council was formed and consists of
affiliated organizations in areas of Kent county: Chatham, Wallaceburg, Tilbury,
Dresden, Thamesville, Ridgetown and Blenheim. These organizations in turn, must
conform to the Constitution and the rules and regulations set up by the Chatham
Kent Labour Council. The Ontario Federation of Labour was created on January 2,
1959. This federation groups together local unions and labour councils
